As temperatures drop and snow starts to fall, winter driving becomes a challenge for everyone—especially for new drivers. SADD wants to help you stay safe, stay smart, and stay alive this winter season. Here are some important tips to keep in mind before you hit the road.
1. Prepare Before You Go
Before you even start your car, take a few minutes to get ready for the conditions.
Clear all snow and ice from your windows, mirrors, headlights, and roof—not just a little “peephole.”
Check your tires for tread and pressure; cold weather can lower tire pressure quickly.
Keep an emergency kit in your car. Include a blanket, flashlight, phone charger, snacks, water, and jumper cables.
2. Slow Down and Stay in Control
Speed limits are made for ideal conditions, not icy roads.
Reduce your speed and increase your following distance to at least six seconds behind the car in front of you.
Avoid sudden braking or sharp turns. Ease into stops and turns to prevent sliding.
If you start to skid, stay calm, steer in the direction you want to go, and avoid slamming the brakes.
3. Stay Focused and Avoid Distractions
Winter weather already makes driving harder—don’t make it worse.
Put your phone away. No text, snap, or playlist is worth risking your life.
Limit passengers if you’re a new driver. Extra noise and distractions make it harder to focus.
Drive sober. Alcohol, drugs, or even fatigue can slow your reaction time when every second counts on slick roads.
4. Watch for Black Ice
Black ice can be invisible and deadly.
Be especially careful on bridges, overpasses, and shaded roads, where ice forms first.
If you hit black ice, don’t panic. Gently lift your foot off the gas and steer straight until you regain traction.
5. Know When Not to Drive
Sometimes, the safest decision is not to drive at all.
If conditions are severe, stay home or delay your plans.
Ask for help or a ride if you don’t feel confident driving. Making a safe choice is always better than taking a risk.
SADD Reminder
Safe driving isn’t just about protecting yourself—it’s about protecting everyone on the road. This winter, commit to driving responsibly, making smart choices, and setting an example for your friends. Together, we can make sure everyone arrives safely, no matter how cold or snowy it gets.
