Eyes Forward: Your Choices Behind the Wheel Matter

April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and at SADD, this is one of the conversations that matters most. For teens, distracted driving is not just a statistic. It is something that affects friend groups, families, and entire communities.

Distractions are not always obvious. It is the quick glance at a notification, the urge to change the song, the message that feels like it cannot wait.

We see it often:

  • Looking at a phone at a stoplight

  • Trying to respond “real quick”

  • Passengers encouraging the driver to check something

But safe driving starts before the car even moves.

SADD believes every teen has the power to influence what safe driving looks like in their friend group. Choosing to put your phone away is choosing to protect your future. Speaking up when a friend is driving distracted is leadership.

You deserve to get where you are going safely. Your friends do too.

Across the country, SADD students are using their voices to change the culture. They are making phone-free driving the expectation, not the exception, and showing their peers that real friends do not pressure each other to take risks behind the wheel.

Safe choices behind the wheel look like:

  • Setting your phone on Do Not Disturb

  • Keeping your eyes and your mind on the road

  • Respecting the driver’s focus

  • Leading by example every time you drive or ride

This is how culture changes. One decision at a time.

This National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, SADD encourages teens to stay focused, stay aware, and look out for each other. Your attention is powerful, and it can save lives.
