National Teen Driver Safety Week: Cruising to Safety

Updated: Oct 8

Each October, across the country, communities recognize National Teen Driver Safety Week (NTDSW). The NTDSW is a week dedicated to raising awareness about the risks young drivers, in particular, face every day on the road. Year after year, motor vehicle crashes continue to remain as one of the leading causes of death among teenagers in the United States; The NTDSW tells how most of these tragedies are preventable.

Why Teen Driver Safety Matters

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that teen drivers (ages 16 to 19) are almost three times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash, in contrast to more experienced drivers (20-plus). Newer drivers tend to be inexperienced, making them more susceptible to distractions, speeding, improper seatbelt use, and other risks. These are some of the key points regarding the most common factors contributing to crashes.

The numbers only share part of the truth. Each statistic recorded represents the lives lost and the families forever changed. The NTDSW doesn’t just focus on the numbers; it focuses on empowering teens to take responsibility while in the driver's seat, and to remind their communities of the importance of the roles in which we all play in support.

The Role of Parents and Guardians

Parents and Guardians are one of, if not the most influential factor in a teen’s driving habits. Teens who report having support and good examples are far more likely to follow the rules of the road.

Here are a few ways parents can get involved during National Teen Driver Safety Week:

  • Set clear rules and expectations. Establish family driving agreements that outline curfews, passenger limits, and consequences for unsafe driving.

  • Model safe driving. Teens learn by example; if parents buckle up, put away the phone, and stay calm behind the wheel, teens are more likely to do the same.

  • Practice, practice, practice. Supervised driving is invaluable. Spend time practicing in a variety of weather, traffic, and roadway conditions to help teens gain confidence.

Teens Leading the Way

Teens themselves are strong advocates for safe driving, even though parental supervision is crucial. Peer pressure can have both positive and negative effects, sometimes promoting hazardous behavior while also fostering an accountable society. Teens who offer to be a designated driver or speak up when a friend drives carelessly are exhibiting life-saving leadership.

Teen voices may be powerful, as demonstrated by initiatives run by youth organizations such as Teens in the Driver Seat (TDS) and Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD). Young leaders have the ability to change driving-related social norms and start meaningful conversations through peer-to-peer initiatives and school-wide activities.

Key Messages for National Teen Driver Safety Week

This year, consider focusing on these life-saving reminders:

  • Buckle Up Every Trip. Seat belts reduce the risk of death in a crash by nearly 50%.

  • Phones Down. Eyes Up. Texting while driving makes a crash up to 23 times more likely.

  • Obey the Speed Limit. Speeding accounts for nearly one-third of fatal teen crashes.

  • Don’t Drive Impaired. Alcohol and drug use are never safe, especially combined with inexperience behind the wheel.

  • Limit Passengers. The risk of a crash increases with each additional teen passenger in the car.

How Schools and Communities Can Help

National Teen Driver Safety Week offers a perfect opportunity for schools, clubs, and community groups to host events that raise awareness. Consider activities like:

  • Hosting a guest speaker from law enforcement or a local trauma center.

  • Creating poster campaigns or social media challenges that highlight safe driving messages.

  • Encouraging students to sign a safe driving pledge.

  • Partnering with local businesses to sponsor incentives for safe driving behavior.

When entire communities come together—parents, educators, peers, and organizations—teens receive consistent, unified messages about the importance of safety.

Moving Forward

National Teen Driver Safety Week is just one week out of the year, but the lessons it promotes should guide every trip a teen driver takes. Driving is a privilege that comes with serious responsibilities. With the right support and awareness, teens can develop safe habits that will last a lifetime.

As we observe this week, let’s recommit to protecting our teens, holding honest conversations, and creating a driving culture rooted in responsibility and care. The decisions made today will shape safer roads tomorrow.
