Taking Time for Yourself This Winter Break

After a long and busy semester filled with classes, activities, and endless to-do lists, winter break always feels like the deep breath I didn’t know I needed. It’s the one time of year where everything slows down a little, and I can finally take some time to rest, recharge, and reflect. Between all the stress that builds up during the school year, it’s so important to give ourselves permission to pause and focus on our well-being.

As a member of SADD, I’ve learned how valuable it is to take care of both my mental and emotional health. Making positive, healthy choices isn’t just about avoiding harmful behaviors, it's also about doing things that support your overall happiness and balance. That’s what winter break is for.

Here are some of my favorite ways to unwind, reset, and make the most of the season.

1. Get Lost in a Good Book

One of my favorite ways to relax is by reading. There’s something so comforting about getting wrapped up in a story, especially when it’s cold outside and you’re curled up with a blanket and a warm drink. Reading nourishes the mind and gives me a way to escape reality for a while.

After months of reading textbooks and assignments, it’s refreshing to read something just for fun. Whether it’s a mystery, a fantasy world, or a lighthearted novel, books have a way of quieting the mind and sparking creativity. It’s a simple, peaceful activity that always leaves me feeling recharged.

2. Try a Fun Recipe

Another great way to spend time over break is by cooking or baking. I recently made warm spiced chai cookies for fall, and they instantly became a favorite. For winter, I’m planning to try some peppermint-inspired recipes, maybe brownies or cookies with crushed peppermint on top.

Cooking is one of those activities that feels both productive and relaxing. Measuring ingredients, mixing, and waiting for something to bake can be surprisingly calming. Plus, there’s nothing better than sharing what you make with friends or family and seeing them enjoy it.

3. Give Back to the Community

Even though winter break is meant for rest, it’s also a wonderful time to give back. Helping others not only benefits the community, it also fills you with gratitude and purpose. Volunteering at a local soup kitchen, donating gently used winter clothes, or helping at a food drive are all meaningful ways to make a difference.

When I take part in service projects, I’m reminded that kindness and empathy can truly brighten someone’s day. As part of SADD, I think that giving back is a powerful example of making positive, intentional choices that support others and strengthen our community.

4. Clean and Organize Your Space

This one might sound small, but cleaning and organizing can do wonders for your mental health. I’ve noticed that when my room is messy, my mind feels just as cluttered. So during break, I like to take an afternoon to clean up my space, put things away, sort through old papers, and maybe even rearrange my room a little.

A clean environment really does lead to a clearer mind. It gives me a sense of calm and helps me feel more prepared for the new year ahead. Starting off with a fresh, organized space makes everything else feel a little easier.

5. Spend Time with Family and Friends

Finally, one of the best parts of winter break is having the time to reconnect with people I care about. During the school year, it’s so easy to get caught up in a busy schedule and forget to slow down and enjoy time with others.

Over break, I love spending relaxed days with friends, watching movies, baking together, or going for walks. I also make sure to spend quality time with my family, whether that means cooking dinner together, playing games, or just talking. These moments might seem simple, but they often turn into the best memories.

Winter break doesn’t have to be packed with plans or excitement. Sometimes the best way to spend it is by doing the things that make you feel grounded, resting, creating, helping, organizing, and connecting.

For me, this time of year is all about balance: taking care of myself, appreciating the people around me, and entering the new year with a clear mind and a grateful heart.

So this winter break, I’m making it my goal to slow down, be present, and focus on the things that truly matter. Whether you’re reading a book, trying a new recipe, volunteering, cleaning your space, or spending time with loved ones, remember that taking care of yourself is one of the healthiest choices you can make.
