Suicide prevention is a year-round effort

This past September we recognized Suicide Prevention Month. Although mental health and suicide are important to address year-round, September is a specific time to focus on spreading hope and vital information.

Currently, in the United States, suicide is one of the top three leading causes of death in people ages 10 to 24. Why does a stigma exist around mental health if so many people struggle? Even though some find it “awkward” or “unnecessary” to have conversations about feelings of depression or suicidal thoughts, it is important that we promote these hard discussions.

By talking about our own feelings and checking in with others, we help build a culture of care within our communities. Because depression and suicidal thoughts can be hard to recognize in others, it is important to understand some of the basic warning signs and risk factors:

  • Changes in sleeping patterns

  • Extreme feelings of stress or sadness

  • Changes in school performance

  • Overuse of substances like alcohol or drugs

  • Inability to carry out daily activities due to lack of motivation or stress

Pay attention to your friends, family, and yourself. Create an environment where people feel valued. Reach out to mental health professionals or others around you for help. September is when we acknowledge the work done in this space, but this is a year-round initiative to help keep folks safe and supported.

If you or someone you know is struggling, consider contacting the national suicide prevention hotline at 988.
