Promoting Personal Health and Safety in Teens

Everyday teens are facing an increasing number of negative peer pressures. They are barraged from all angles and forced to navigate complex health and safety issues. With the advancements in technology, the reduction of opportunities for physical activity, and the glorification of violence and other destructive behaviors displayed by mainstream celebrities, pressure to live up to unrealistic ideals of the media and fashion industries, and the ultimate failure do so, add significant emotional burdens on teens.

Students across the country have asked for help in addressing emerging issues that are important to them which exist outside of underage drinking and alcohol abuse such as substance abuse, suicide, self harm, depression, bullying, violence, and body image. SADD strives to equip students with the best, most effective information and resources and let them take the lead on which issues to address in their communities. SADD’s three main focus areas in Personal Health & Safety for teens are:

  • Physical/Emotional Abuse: Learn to recognize the signs of physical and emotional abuse and what you can do to help. Learn more…
  • Depression/Anxiety: About 1 in 4 Americans is diagnosed with a mental illness at any given time. SADD has tools available to help identify the warning signs and empower teens to ask for help. Learn more…
  • Suicide and Self Harm:  Nearly 1 in 12 teens deliberately hurt themselves.  Self-injury, also known as self-harm or self-mutilation, is defined as an act wherein someone deliberately hurts or injures themselves.  Self-injury is most often used as a coping mechanism and is not an attempt at suicide.  Learn more…

Teens today are dealing with a growing number of issues that affect their health and well-being. The range of growing issues is alarming and SADD is committed to providing the best tools and support to help teens address other critical issues such as: body image and eating disorders, self-harm, suicide,  and more.

What We Are Doing About It: SADD chapters have access to experts, information, tools and campaigns that address a growing range of issues teens are struggling with today. As we hear from teens on the emerging issues, we strive to provide the best tools and support to educate and empower our teens to take the leadership position in their schools and communities and address these issues head on.
