Coalition Programming and Expert Technical Support
Mobilizing The Community: an underage drinking prevention program for community coalitions
SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) has developed “Mobilizing the Community” (MTC): Youth Taking the Lead,” as an initiative to help communities reduce attitudes and norms that support or encourage underage drinking, promote readiness and efficacy to refrain from or discourage drinking, and, ultimately, to reduce self-reported drinking behaviors. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety, Highway Safety Division (EOPS-HSD), and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health Bureau of Substance Abuse Services funded the development of these efforts. This work builds on work between staff at Education Development Center, Inc (EDC), Social Science Research and Evaluation (SSRE), and SADD around how to bolster the effectiveness of solutions SADD implements to reduce or deter underage drinking while remaining true to the mission of SADD to involve youth in the creation and implementation of prevention strategies. SADD chapters have access to national core programs and activities that use peer-to-peer based prevention strategies to engage schools, parents, and communities about the most critical issues facing teens today in our three core issue areas of Teen Traffic Safety, Substance Abuse, and Personal Health & Safety.
