NEWS ADVISORY CONTACT: SADD YOUTH TO REPRESENT UNITED STATES AT WORLD YOUTH ASSEMBLY WHAT: The United Nations is holding its first-ever World Youth Assembly for Road Safety during Global Road Safety Week (April 23 - 29, 2007) to give a voice to young people on the road safety issue. This event will bring together young people ages 18-25 from around the world, including two leaders from SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions). WHO: 2005-2006 SADD National Student of the Year Jessica Billings of Bloomington, Minnesota, and 2006-2007 SADD National Student of the Year Daniel Vocelle of Vero Beach, Florida, are two of three road safety advocates who have been chosen to represent the United States at the World Youth Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland, April 23 - 24. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the State Department have joined together with many other federal partners and non-profit organizations to take part in this new international safety observance. WHERE: World Youth Assembly for Road Safety – Geneva, Switzerland WHEN: April 23-24, 2007 WHY: Traffic fatalities are a growing problem worldwide – more than one million people are killed each year. The U.S. and other Western countries have had much success over the past 30 years in reducing traffic fatalities and have much to offer other nations. As a national peer-to-peer youth education and prevention organization, SADD is committed to empowering teens to make safe, positive decisions. Traffic safety continues to be a key issue for SADD. These two SADD leaders will offer their valuable expertise at the assembly and will return home with new ideas to promote and reinforce safe teen driving across the country.##### |
