SELF-INJURY
WARNING SIGNS
Are you worried that a friend is self-injuring? Look for these symptoms.
- Unusual cuts, scrapes, or burns and an unwillingness to discuss them
- Withdrawal from friends and family
- Wearing long sleeves in warm weather or constantly covering up arms, wrists, and/or legs
- Possession of sharp objects such as razors and knives
There is help for self-injurers. A trained therapist can help the teen improve coping skills, articulate concerns, and provide safe ways to express anger, guilt, and pain. Medication may also be used in conjunction with therapy.
