Real Life SADD: Hogs vs. Dogs Flag Football Game
The Baker County Middle School SADD club in MacClenny, Florida, found a creative way to spread a healthy lifestyle message during Super Bowl weekend in 2008. The SADD club held a flag football game to raise funds and to spread the SADD message. The local deputies and firefighters played in the first (and to be annual) Hogs vs. Dogs at the PIG (Pride, Integrity, and Guts) Bowl. The game brought the community together to have fun, and the group found many creative ways to send a safety message throughout the event. SADD students gave out to fans free items with the “Buckle Up” and “Don’t Drink and Drive” messages. The game’s announcers mentioned the SADD mission several times during the game, and the players’ shirts displayed a “Just Say No” message. The chapter included many members of the community in the event and showed true community support for their program. They marketed their event by printing up banners, yard signs, fliers, and tickets. They placed an article in the local newspaper, and a commercial ran for three days prior to the event on a local television station. Students who demonstrated improved behavior and grades received free tickets, and general ticket sales resulted in $2,900 raised for the SADD chapter. More than 1,000 people attended the event.
