Drugs: True Stories
Drugs: True Stories has been evaluated as “a prevention program with promise” according to the National Registry of Effective Prevention Programs criteria. The evaluation was conducted by Harvard Medical School. Previously, our DVD, Alcohol: True Stories Hosted by Matt Damon, received the same distinction.
After watching the DVD, Drugs: True Stories, both youth and adult viewers reported “increased intentions to have family discussions about illicit drug use.” This positive first step is key. Research shows that young people who talk with parents about drugs are significantly less likely to use drugs.
Harvard scientists also found that Drugs: True Stories shows promise to positively affect participants’ current behaviors and intentions about illicit drug use.
The evaluation also shows that 79 percent of students and 95 percent of adults would recommend it to their peers.
Through powerful vignettes, Drugs: True Stories follows Joel and Trevor and their experience with drugs. Joel’s early abuse of alcohol and marijuana led to prescription painkillers and eventually to addiction, denial, and recovery. Trevor’s commitment to a drug-free lifestyle was influenced by a caring support system and his own self-determination. H. Westley Clark, M.D., SAMHSA, and Howard Shaffer, Ph.D., Harvard Medical School, answer FAQs.

“Drugs: True Stories is a brilliantly produced and very hopeful piece. It illustrates very nicely the progression that goes with addiction.” Richard Falzone, M.D., Clinical Instructor in Psychiatry, McLean Hospital, Harvard Medical School
“Drugs: True Stories helps young people and parents understand the dangers associated with the misuse of drugs. The true stories illuminate issues that are essential for everyone to understand: there are real risks and hazards associated with using drugs; these drugs can adversely affect the brain; and, that it is possible to prevent drug misuse. The program demonstrates the powerful denial that can surround drug abuse – on the part of the users and those around them. It’s a resource that can help families and communities prevent drug misuse and reduce the harms that often associate with even casual use.” Howard J. Shaffer, Ph.D., C.A.S, Director, Division on Addictions, Cambridge Health Alliance, Harvard Medical School
